All Saints C of E Primary School

History

At All Saints, through our teaching of History, we aim to encourage and stimulate our children’s interest, curiosity and understanding about the past through our carefully planned curriculum. We aspire to achieve this through rich in-depth opportunities provided for our children: in class by our teachers, on trips, thematic days and immersive experiences our children participate in throughout their school life.

Our curriculum is in line with the National curriculum requirements and focuses on understanding chronology, developing inquiry, analysis and interpretation skills while teaching knowledge of concepts, events, and people from the past. Using a range of primary and secondary historical sources and artefacts, children are taught that history is created from the evidence that remains and that the story of the past is told differently by different groups of people. Children learn to make judgements about the accuracy and reliability of the evidence, handling contradictions and understanding why these occur.

Children begin to recognise the complexity and diversity of human experience, and understand more about themselves as individuals and members of society as well as an appreciation for the diversity of other societies. We would like our children to leave All Saints with the skills to reflect, discuss, debate and evaluate the past with respect to their own and other people’s cultures in modern, multicultural Britain and the wider world.

We realise that God’s fullness for us is shown in the gift of creation. This first value takes us back to God, the giver of abundant life. Now more than ever, our call to steward God’s creation is of upmost importance: not least to our young people. We focus on creating a community in which all are known, valued and given space to thrive and find abundance. From that secure base within a safe environment, we encourage our children to look out to the world with compassion. With the skills they have learnt, they can take the abundance of their education out to life beyond our school grounds, with the confidence to speak out and excel.
